Motion Capture for XR Performance

In this class, students will be introduced to various methods of motion capture (or mocap), starting with what it means to endeavor to β€œcapture” motion. Students will analyze how all mocap methods require a process of reduction, and be encouraged to critically reflect on what technology enables and erases as they move through a series of creative projects.

Through these projects, students will learn how to operate and gather motion data from inertial systems (motion capture suits) and cutting-edge AI motion capture (Captury Markerless Mocap). Then, they will transfer collected data to creative software and live performance environments. Projects will be guided by peer-to-peer critique and discussions about the theory and history of motion capture.
