Stock Motion Performances

During this class, we’ll be learning how to make performances from stock motion.* We’ll use Unity software to string these motions together in digital space. Then, we’ll teach ourselves how to perform the digital performances we’ve developed back in physical space. Finally, we’ll use motion capture software to challenge, disrupt, amplify, and/or mimic stock motion.

This class culminates in an exhibition of mixed physical and digital performance, using arranged stock motion, recorded motion capture, and live performance. Throughout, we’ll be interested in how motion comes to be considered “generic,” “default,” “normal,” or “useful,” and what kinds of bodies (digital and physical) are expected to perform these motions. Assignments will interrogate and challenge such assumptions and their social and political implications.

* “Stock motion” is the motion capture (mocap) equivalent of stock images - generic, pre-recorded movement clips that you can download off of various libraries for free or low cost. A stock motion performance uses stock motion as its primary storytelling material.
